There are so many amazing shows available on Netflix that you have no choice but to keep living and getting excited about what you see! In the complicated situation of a great variety of choice offered on this platform, we’ve decided to create the catalog of the best shows on Netflix – we’re confident they all are cool, so consider it as a must-see list!

#20 LOUIE

Number of seasons: 5
Leading actors: Louis C.K.
As the first example of the good shows on Netflix in our opinion, this one is great by being centered on an outstanding personality of its author, screenplay, director, and the key actor Louis C.K. As the key character in the series, this guy maintains his reputation as an exceptional standup comic that is able show the life in the format of a small bar brilliantly. Specifically, the story is rather unconnected – John Landgraf perfectly described its structure as “extended vignettes,” – but all the elements are centered around the same personality (what an egocentrism!), which brings the show integrity. Sometimes funny, sometimes disgusting. But as usual, strange and talented, Mr. Louis C.K.!

#19 LOST

Number of seasons: 6
Leading actors: Naveen Andrews, Emilie de Ravin, Matthew Fox, Jorge Garcia, Maggie Grace
The title of this series available on Netflix is the complete truth – you’ll be constantly lost to explain what’s going on there. This intriguing drama can keep you on tenterhooks by bombarding your mind with questions from the field of science fiction and supernatural studies that have either no answers or blurry explanations. In its 121 episodes, the unusual story happens with the survivors of airplane crash stuck on a tropical desolate island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, developing the primary storyline with numerous flashbacks and flashforwards. If this overall description does not irritate or confuse you – you’ll surely love this show and put it much higher in your personal rating. To check this, start right from the first award-winning season, and you’ll see the result.

#18 BOJACK HORSEMAN

Number of seasons: 3
Leading voices: Will Arnett, Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie
As one of best shows on Netflix right now, this very interesting adult animated series first surprises you with the main character, BoJack, but then makes you like him. The same situation happened with the show’s critics, who first doubted its success but after highly appreciated the second part of the first season. Although, be ready that the joy of watching it is bittersweet, since it is fun and depressing at the same time. What’s happening there? The location is Hollywoo[d], where the alternative world of humans and human-esque animals exists. In this hopeless place, BoJack tries to come back to his celebrity life. As you see, even though a washed-up horse character is rather grotesque, you’ll get involved in the discussion on much deeper topics than it seems to promise. Intrigued? Just watch and be careful not to fall into depression after watching!

#17 DEXTER

Number of seasons: 8
Leading actors: Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas
This crime drama mystery series represents the perfect criminal, Dexter Morgan, who has a burning sense of justice (to be honest, this phrase was enough for me to start watching these series immediately!). In detail, Michael C. Hall works as a blood spatter pattern analyst in a Miami police department and hides his secret life of a serial killer who satisfies his guilty passion by killing only murders. So, from the starting scenes the show guarantees that the plot will always have enough space to keep the spectators in suspense. Unfortunately, not all the seasons are that good. My recommendation is to fall in love with the first season and then watch the series till the fourth one, as I did. The rest is not that good, so it’s the great news the creators finally announced that the eighth season is the last one.

#16 GILMORE GIRLS

Number of seasons: 7
Leading actors: Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Melissa McCarthy, Keiko Agena, Yanic Truesdale
You’ve probably heard of a loud comeback of this series the previous year after a long break (and it may happen even not for once). Everyone who knew the story of Lorelei and Rory Gilmore was excited. But the question is open – why it is worth watching? Among all, to experience the atmosphere of a small American town, with all the small cute things its inhabitants do. The story of a single mother and her only daughter can surely cheer you up even in the most problematic day. These girls love food, TV shows, people around them, and each other. Because it is so nice, it’s a never-ending joy for re-watching, especially in the cold autumn or winter accompanied with a cup of hot chocolate and sweets.

#15 SHERLOCK

Number of seasons: 4
Leading actors: Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman
The comeback of Sherlock Holmes story that has already became legendary. Even if someone thought it is rather contradictory at the very beginning to use the classic story in the way the creators of these series did, soon all the sceptics recognized both the respect to Arthur Conan Doyle’s book atmosphere and the engaging twists in the plot. With the brilliantly acted main characters, this British series represents the well-known detective as a contemporary man with an eccentric and unconfident behavior, while his fellow doctor as an army veteran that has no choice by to be by his side. By watching, you’ll recognize even more surprises!

#14 PEAKY BLINDERS

Number of seasons: 3
Leading actors: Cillian Murphy, Sam Neill, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Annabelle Wallis
Being a British equivalent of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, Peaky Blinders has an undeniable advantage, and its name is Cillian Murphy. Furthermore, the show invited Tom Hardy, but finish watching the first season to see him. As the last argument, even Winston Churchill appears in the story! Concerning the plot, the series depicts the life of the Peaky Blinders gang from Birmingham after the First World War. The problems appear because of the competition between a commissioned detective (Sam Neill) and the ambitious gang leader (Cillian Murphy). With the brilliant cast and such a sharp conflict, watching this show is a pure pleasure!

#13 LUTHER

Number of seasons: 4
Leading actors: Idris Elba, Ruth Wilson, Steven Mackintosh
Another show involving the appearance of a great detective. In this case, the presented psychological crime drama is rather a black cop story. With the splendid main character, the storyline develops with the impulsive behavior of the Detective Chief Inspector who really loves his job but cannot stand of being fully involved in what he investigates, meaning devolving into the criminal world. The result is an intriguing and addicting show!

#12 HOUSE OF CARDS

Number of seasons: 4
Leading actors: Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, Kate Mara, Corey Stoll, Michael Kelly
Amazing introduction into the world politics – all the dirty games, balancing of powers, and politicians’ personal contribution to the life of average citizens is on the surface. But even if you’re not fond of the political agenda, the series can offer you a twisted plot, specific humor, and the charismatic play of Kevin Spacey, obviously. The story itself describes the political career of Frank Underwood, who strives both to get the greater power with each new episode and to maintain his current success. Unfortunately, not all the seasons are as excellent as the first one, but all of them are worth watching. The show is truly both entertaining and insightful!

#11 THE OFFICE

Number of seasons: 2 (U.K.); 9 (U.S.)
Leading actors: Ricky Gervais, Martin Freeman, Mackenzie Crook (U.K. version); Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer (U.S. version)
The story about this series has two different parts, since it has a British and an American version. In the original U.K. The Office, you face the specific humor of this country to the fullest degree (thanks to Ricky Gervais for that). On another hand, the U.S. version adapted this material to create a highly appreciated and truly funny sitcom. The same feature about both versions is that they firstly had problems with critics and low rating, but then managed to turn the show into success. So, we recommend you to wait for the middle seasons in the U.S. The Office – they are commonly appreciated as the best ones.

#10 WALKING DEAD

Number of seasons: 7
Leading actors: Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Sarah Wayne Callies, Laurie Holden
This series on Netflix address the question of what the humanity can do in the circumstances of zombie apocalypses. Interested? At least, for me that’s enough to switch on and check. And the fact that so many people around you talk about its plot proves that I’m not the only one intrigued. At the same time, the show is rather contradictory. It can be fantastic and deeply touching; but sometimes the plot turns to disaster. However, with each season the situation gets better and better, so don’t judge the series to strictly from the very beginning.

#9 HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

Number of seasons: 9
Leading actors: Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders
You probably heard this award-winning (28 nominations and 9 awards from Emmy) story of Ted Mosby as a father of two children in 2030 who recollects his youth memories spent in Manhattan. It’s interesting to watch the sitcom due to the plenty of eccentric humor and interesting storyline. At the same time, it’s another top series with a contradictory structure. In general, it’s a nice sitcom that was doing great till the fifth season. No matter what, it’s always fun watching HIMYM, so it surely worth trying.

#8 FRIENDS

Number of seasons: 10
Leading actors: Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer
Legendary series. If you’re rather young to watch it before Netflix was invented, this quick overview is for you. The Friends represents the funny and romantic moments of six young roommates. They date and break up, joke, eat, watch movies, and do it awesomely! The most popular show of all time, surely we had no choice but to include it on the list.

#7 HOMELAND

Number of seasons: 6
Leading actors: Claire Danes, Damian Lewis, Morena Baccarin, David Harewood, Jackson Pace
Spy thriller series from the U.S. (that actually also fits in the categories “serial drama,” “crime thriller,” “psychological thriller,” “political thriller,” and “espionage thriller”) is the great show that touches numerous critical topics for the American society. Central Intelligence Agency, operations in Iraq, prisoners of war, al-Queda, bipolar disorder, job problems, and other hot topics frequently appearing in the newspapers get here an impressive storyline. Finally, Homeland has the great title, since it brilliantly shows the contemporary agenda in the United States and reflects all the key problems the country has. Absolutely worth watching, even though not that popular.

#6 AMERICAN CRIME STORY: PEOPLE VS. O.J. SIMPSON

Number of seasons: 1
Leading actors: Sterling K. Brown, Kenneth Choi, Christian Clemenson
Only one, but what an amazing season! The story is about the trial that happened 20 years ago  – so the ending of the series is obvious long before opening Netflix channel. But the predictability is surely not the trait of this show – you’ll still remain in a suspicious and tense mood. For such an outstanding achievement, Emmi gave 20 nomination and 8 awards to American Crime Story. In my opinion, the amazing invention of the directors is to represent the well-known case from the contemporary perspective, with the result of 20-year reflection on the previous events and their outcomes. And it’s brilliantly performed, and it can surprise you even after reading this overview!

#5 MAD MEN

Number of seasons: 7
Leading actors: Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, January Jones, Christina Hendricks
A truly great show, trust me. Even if you find the beginning too slow, the fantastic ending will compensate your patience. The title refer to the slang expression popular in 1950s, by using which Madison Avenue advisors labeled themselves. Correspondingly, the storyline depicts the career of a gifted creative director and people around him (both at a workplace and in a life after work). In other words, you’ll see the life of a successful businessman and the professional and personal challenges he experiences. Always interesting to know!

#4 BETTER CALL SAUL

Number of seasons: 3
Leading actors: Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Rhea Seehorn
As a spin-off of Breaking Bad (It will appear in this list, no worries), this series inherited the great traits of the main drama, meaning a sophisticated, dynamic, and interesting plot development and changing of characters. You’ll see the life of a small-time lawyer James Morgan “Jimmy” McGill, which he had six years before the events showed in Breaking Bad. The cool invention of Better Call Saul is Saul’s transformation to more humane and emotional side, while creators did it carefully not to break his identity. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this intellectual and detailed drama as much as I did!

#3 ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK

Number of seasons: 4
Leading actors: Taylor Schilling, Laura Prepon, Michael J. Harney, Michelle Hurst
Everybody talks about it, and the series deserves it – this the best original show now on Netflix, according to numerous ratings. The storyline revolves in Litchfield Penitentiary, a women’s federal prison. As a dramedy genre representative, OITNB contains all the elements to impress spectators – humor, interesting people, constant action, realism, and never-ending plot development. Moreover, it has a great social impact – it’s the only series that talks so much about common labels (like gays, murderers or thieves) and transforms their image to a more humanized one. Perfect combination for a worthwhile viewing!

#2 BLACK MIRROR

Number of seasons: 3
Leading actors: No
The only reaction possible after watching this short British series is amazement. The plot is developing separately in each episode, but there is one trait in common – all they talk about technology and its role in our lives. And I mean, it explains this complex stuff amazingly! Moreover, the overall series is short, which is also a good point – you can carefully watch and re-watch each piece, see the problem from the different angle, and enjoy it again and again. Enough said, just open any episode you like and see the result (I started from S2E2, and was hooked completely)

#1 BREAKING BAD

Number of seasons: 5
Leading actors: Bryan Cranston, Anna Gunn, Aaron Paul
And here is an obvious winner in the list of best shows on Netflix, one of the favorites of most people around you. Why? Is it really that great? Oh yes! The story of Walter White conquered the world by showing the psychology of criminals and their striving to survive and secure their families; it’s unique by turning a protagonist into an antagonist right in front of the spectators’ eyes. The plot’s transformation is amazing, touching, intriguing, emotional, unexpected. In short, all the descriptions of a perfect show are valid in the case of Breaking Bad. I’m jealous if you haven’t watched it and can experience all these emotions for the first time.

No matter which shows you choose in the result, you’ll surely enjoy your nights and weekends!
